G7 LIVE: Keir Starmer braces for face-to-face with Donald Trump | Politics | News

Sir Keir Starmer is to hold face-to-face talks with Donald Trump where he is confident of ensuring his trade deal with the US is put into effect.

The Prime Minister has been criticised for announcing a deal that will cut US tariffs on British-made cars, and and tarrifs on steel products from the UK, when there was no date for putting the agreement into effect.

But speaking at the G7 summit in Canada, the Prime Minister said the deal was in the โ€œfinal stagesโ€ and he expects it to be completed โ€œvery soonโ€.

“But yes, Iโ€™ll be discussing that with President Trump, along with another number of other things.

โ€œIโ€™ll be having a one-on-one with him. I think Iโ€™m seeing him on a number of occasions today, because weโ€™re in all of the sessions together.

โ€œSo Iโ€™ll be having a lot of conversations with President Trump, but we will be talking about our trade deal, because the trade deal, because that really matters for the vital sectors that are safeguarded under our deal, and so weโ€™ve got to implement that now.โ€

The Prime Minister will be formally welcomed to the summit by his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney at 5pm UK time.

He is expected to hold talks with the US President, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Freidrich Merz over the course of the conference.

The escalating conflict between Israel and Iran is likely to be high on the agenda as world leaders gather in Alberta.
