Politics LIVE: Donald Trump NATO showdown as PM puts Britain on war fo | Politics | News
Donald Trump is set to cause havoc at today’s NATO summit as he prepares to once again leave a major international summit earlier than planned.
The US President arrived at Amsterdam last night, after having refused to stay more than a single night, to insure fellow members of the defence organisation all sign a communique setting out a plan to spend 5% of their GDP of military spending.
President Trump’s attendance has already set nerves on edge after he cast doubt on NATO’s ‘article 5’ clause, which guarantees that an attack against one member is an attack against all.
Asked about his commitment to the clause on Air Force One, he said: “Depends on your definition. There are numerous definitions of Article 5. You know that, right? But Iโm committed to being their friends.โ
โIโm committed to saving lives. Iโm committed to life and safety. And Iโm going to give you an exact definition when I get there. I just donโt want to do it on the back of an airplane.โ
Sir Keir Starmer will encounter the US President for the second time in recent weeks, after they agreed to a new trade deal at the G7 summit in Canada just over a week ago.
