Object that fell into Polish airspace may have been from old propeller engin

An object which fell and exploded in a cornfield in eastern Poland may have been a component of an old propeller engine, the Polish army said on Wednesday, adding that there had been no violation of Poland’s airspace from Ukraine or Belarus.

Police had earlier announced that an unidentified object had fallen in a field in the village of Osiny in eastern Poland’s Lublin province, which borders Ukraine.

Polish army: Polish airspace wasn’t violated by Ukraine or Belarus

Poland’s army has said that no violation of Polish airspace was recorded last night from either Ukraine or Belarus after an unidentified object fell into a cornfield and exploded near the village of Osiny in eastern Poland’s Lublin province, which borders Ukraine.

No one was injured by the incident, although a nearby farm building was damaged.

Police said: “During the search of the area, uniformed officers discovered metal and plastic components of an unknown object in a field.

“The activities are being carried out under the supervision of the prosecutor’s office. The military and relevant services have been notified.”

Unidentified object explodes in Polish village bordering Ukraine

An unidentified object fell into a cornfield and exploded overnight in the village of Osiny in eastern Poland’s Lublin province, which borders Ukraine, police said on Wednesday.

The blast shattered windows in several homes, but nobody was injured, the report said. Police officers found burnt metal and plastic debris at the site, it added.

Air raid sirens rang out for about an hour over the border in Ukraine’s Volyn and Lviv regions from around 9am GMT, according to messages from its military posted on Telegram.

There were no reports of air attacks in those regions, their governors said.

“We are trying to establish what the object could be. Police and firefighters are on the scene,” Lukow county police spokesperson Marek Jozwik said.

Russia has ‘special mechanisms’ to supply oil to India, embassy official says

Russia will continue supplying oil to India and the country’s President Vladimir Putin will meet India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi by the end of year, a Russian embassy official in India said on Wednesday.

Russia has a “very, very special mechanism” to continue oil supplies to India, Roman Babushkin, the charge d’affaires at the Russian embassy in India, told reporters at a press briefing, adding that India’s crude oil imports from Russia will remain at the same level.

This comes as the US is set to impose an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian exports on August 28, citing their imports of Russian oil.

Zelensky-Putin meeting ‘better without me’, says Trump

A meeting between Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin would be best held without Donald Trump, the US president has said himself.

He said the pair are “in the process” of setting up a bilateral meeting, casting doubt on the prospect of a trilateral summit involving the president.

“Now I think it would be better if they met without me,” Trump told radio host Mark Levin according to Sky News.

Moscow has not given any indication it is ready to participate in a bilateral summit.

Budapest or Istanbul? Where could Putin and Zelensky meet for a bilateral summit

A number of locations, some in Europe and others in the Middle East, have been floated for a possible meeting between Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin.

The location will have to be considered friendly enough to the Russian leader that Moscow won’t have to worry about him being arrested on an International Criminal Court warrant.

Trump discussed Budapest as a venue for a summit involving Zelensky and Putin with Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orban on Tuesday, a White House official said.

Istanbul, where delegations for the two countries have met previously, has also been mentioned, a senior administration official said.

Of all European leaders, Orban maintains the closest ties with the Russian leader. It is unclear whether Ukraine would accept Hungary as a venue, however.

Neutral Switzerland also said it would be ready to host Putin for any peace talks.”They are in the process of setting it up,” Trump told radio host Levin about a Putin-Zelensky meeting.

However, there has been so far no confirmation from Russia that a potential bilateral meeting between Putin and Zelensky is being planned.

UK preparing to send troops to Ukraine as part of ‘reassurance force’ if peace deal is struck

The pledge came after Sir Keir Starmer co-chaired a meeting of the “coalition of the willing” attended by more than 30 international leaders to lay out plans to meet their American counterparts to agree security guarantees for Ukraine to deter future Russian aggression.

The virtual meeting on Tuesday, which followed the leaders’ talks with Mr Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky in Washington on Monday, also discussed possible further sanctions on Russia to pile pressure on Vladimir Putin to end the war.

We had one chance to sink the Russian economy and we blew it – Putin knew we would

Though Vladimir Putin’s economy is floundering, it is by no means crippled.

And while Putin has failed to subjugate the whole of Ukraine to his will, he is on course to accomplish many of his war aims, including the “liberation” of the Russian-speaking region of the country and blocking Kyiv’s membership of Nato.

The West carries much of the blame for this failure. Oil and gas are the lifeblood of Russia’s war machine – yet from the outset of the war, the US prioritised protecting steady world oil supplies over properly punishing Putin. Europe, too, has imposed 18 rounds of sanctions against Russia – yet itself has continued to find ways to import Russian oil, piped and liquefied gas (LNG), and refined oil products.

Europe had one chance to sink the Russian economy and blew it. Since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia has pocketed nearly €1 trillion from oil and gas. After China, the EU has been the second biggest buyer of Putin’s gas, handing over €260bn, writes Owen Matthews:
