Angela Rayner prevented from sharing details of housing saga due to court order | Politics | News

Angela Rayner has been prevented from giving a full explanation of her property arrangements because of a court order, No 10 has said.
Downing Street Prime Minister Keir Starmer had confidence in his deputy after she faced questions over whether she avoided ยฃ40,000 in stamp duty when buying her new flat in Hove, East Sussex, after forfeiting her share of her constituency home in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester.
Asked earlier if Sir Keir had confidence in his deputy, the PM’s official spokesman said: โYes, the prime minister works closely with the deputy prime ministerโฆ on delivering on the publicโs priorities.
โThere is a court order which restricts her from providing further information, which sheโs urgently working on rectifying in the interests of public transparency.โ
Sir Keir defended Ms Rayner himself in an interview with BBC 5 Live and said it was a โmistakeโ for people to brief against her or talk her down. He said: โAngela is deputy prime minister of this country, thatโs an incredible achievement.
โAnd Angela came from a very humble background, battled all sorts of challenges along the way, and there she is proudly โ and Iโm proud of her โ as our deputy prime minister. Angela has had people briefing against her and talking her down over and over again. Itโs a mistake, by the way.โ
The PM then mistakenly called Ms Rayner, who is often talked up as a replacement for Sir Keir, the prime minister. He said: โAngela is an incredible prime minister โ deputy prime minister โ but what a great story of British success that we are a country where Angela Rayner could be our deputy prime minister.
โIโm proud of that. I think we should be proud as a country that Angela Rayner is our deputy prime minister, and that, by the way, will give I donโt know how many working-class children, particularly girls, a real sense of aspiration.โ
A spokesman for Ms Rayner said: โThe deputy prime minister paid the relevant duty owing on the purchase of the Hove property in line with relevant requirements and entirely properly, any suggestion otherwise is entirely without basis.โ
