Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin continues to make history.
The Russian superstar scored a hat trick in an 8-4 victory against the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night at the Bell Centre. Ovechkinโs goal was his fourth point of the night, having scored three times and added an assist. It was also his 1,642nd career point, moving him into 10th all-time in points by an NHLer and surpassing centre Joe Sakic.

Ovechkin is now 66 points behind fellow captain and rival Sidney Crosby for ninth all-time in NHL points. Ovechkin, the current record-holder for most goals scored in the NHL, now has 907 goals to his name.
The Russian also has 10 goals and 20 points in 21 games this season for the Capitals, in addition to goals in four consecutive games, dating back to Nov. 13 against the New Jersey Devils, and goals in five of his last six games.
Thursday nightโs hat trick moves Ovechkin into a two-way tie for the fourth most hat tricks of all time, with 33, sharing that honor with Brett Hull.

The Capitals are winners of three straight after Thursday nightโs victory, and the Canadiens have now lost five consecutive games.
