‘Reeves Budget made all the wrong choices – she should resign’ | Politics | News

Rachel Reevesโ€™s Budget has been widely criticised for punishing those who work, while rewarding those living life fully on benefits. Now, following Conservative leader Kemi Badenochโ€™s verbal annihilation of Reeves, Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer Mel Stride has called for Reeves to resign.

Speaking exclusively to the Daily Expresso podcast, Mel said: โ€œOh, I thought it was just all the wrong choices sadly. You know, putting up taxes on hardworking people with this extension of the income tax threshold freeze. Which is something that she basically said she wouldn’t do. She ruled it out if you remember at the budget last year saying it would hit working people and that’s exactly what she’s done”.

The Shadow Chancellor believes Reeves and Labour have made wrong choices. “I think what she should have done is to concentrate on getting government spending down to allow both herself to bear down on the debt a bit but equally to cut taxes to get the economy growing.

“And I think there will be pressure further on down the line because she’s backending a lot of the pain, these tax rises nearer to the next general election while front ending some of the spending, particularly on benefits and so on”.

When pushed on whether Rachel Reeves should resign from her post, Mel Stride said “I actually think and so does [Kemi Badenoch] that she should consider her position”.
