NBA Cup score and live updates: Spurs beat Lakers, Thunder blow out Suns in quarterfinals
Assuming they hold on, the Spurs will move to 9-3 since Victor Wembanyama suffered a left calf strain. Itโd be ridiculous to suggest the Spurs are better without Wembanyama โ at a minimum, they badly miss him on defense โ but itโs interesting to see the Spurs evolve into this guard-driven, relentless drive-and-kick offensive team without their superstar.
Once Wembanyama comes back, one could imagine him spending more time as a floor spacer and play-finisher on lobs than he did earlier in the season. He didnโt have the luxury of playing much with DeโAaron Fox, or even with Dylan Harper, who had his own injury issues earlier in the season. That forced Wembanyama to create more of his own offense than he probably should be creating at this early stage of his career.
If Mitch Johnson can find a way to maximize Wembanyama without losing the fast-paced style that has powered this 12-game stretch, the Spurs could be a capital P problem in the league even sooner than we all think.
