A leading political commentator has suggested that Donald Trump’s decline is already under way as fears about oppression in the USA skyrocket.

Since the deaths of Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti, two civilians shot and killed by ICE agents earlier this month, there have been fears about the health of America’s democracy.

These concerns have been amplified by the arrest of two journalists Don Lemon and Georgia Fort, leading to worries about press freedom in America.

Despite this, leading commentator Andrew Neil has suggested that as speculation intensifies about Trump’s physical and psychological health, that his administration could already be on the way out.

Writing in the Daily Mail, Andrew said that, with a growing number of Republicans dissatisfied with Trump and his popularity rate falling, this could lead to the rise of more moderate politicians to fill the void left by MAGA politics.

He said: “The decline of the Trump presidency is probably already under way. If it ends with a whimper and disappointment rather than a celebratory bang that will embolden more moderate Republicans to reassert themselves, which in turn will encourage the Democrats to remain in the mainstream rather than strike out to the Left.”

Andrew, a former BBC and GB News journalist, added, however, that even if Trump leaves office, America will be forever changed by his brand of political manoeuvring.

He said: “A return to the American politics we knew before Trump is not on the cards. But America need not be condemned indefinitely to the current craziness.”

Andrew’s comments came following the arrest of two journalists, former CNN anchor Don Lemon and Georgia Fort earlier this week, raising the alarm of press freedom groups, who have since responded to the arrests.

Don was arrested on charges that he violated federal law whilst covering a protest at a church in Minnesota earlier this month. The justice department said Don and three others had interfered with the exercise of religious freedom at a place of worship, claims Don denies.

Georgia Fort, another arrested journalist, took to social media to post a video of federal agents outside her home. Following his release, Don said he would not give up on reporting the news.

He said: “I have spent my entire career covering the news. I will not stop now. The first amendment to the US Constitution protects that work for me and countless other journalists who do what I do. I stand with all of them, and I will not be silenced. I look forward to my day in court.”

Meanwhile, the Guardian reports that press freedom groups in the USA have condemned the arrests. Executive director of the International Press Institute Scott Griffen said: “The arrests of two independent journalists doing their jobs is a shocking and disturbing escalation of the Trump administration’s campaign against the free press in America.

“This is an unequivocal attack on the first amendment and the American people’s right to know. The outcome of this case will have direct consequences for the future of free media and free information in America.”
