The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas will go into effect at 06.30 GMT on Sunday, mediator Qatar said.

The ceasefire will pause the fighting after 15 months of war and see the release of dozens of hostages held by the militants in the Gaza Strip and hundreds of Palestinians imprisoned by Israel.

Israel’s Cabinet approved the deal early on Saturday; the ceasefire will see the first hostages released.

Brokered by mediators the United States, Qatar and Egypt in months of indirect talks between the warring sides, the ceasefire is the second truce achieved in the devastating conflict.

Israel’s war against Hamas has killed over 46,000 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, according to Gaza‘s Health Ministry. It does not say how many of the dead were militants. Israel says it has killed over 17,000 fighters, without providing evidence.

A large group of protesters has broken police lines and marched on Trafalgar Square at a pro-Palestine rally taking place in central London.

Hundreds have gathered for the static protest in Whitehall with people holding signs reading “Gaza. Stop the massacre” and “Stop arming Israel”.

Some of the protesters have marched to Trafalgar Square, with the Met Police saying a large group has broken a police line to enter the square.

A spokesperson said: “Officers were holding the line at the top of Whitehall to stop any groups marching which would be a breach of the conditions. Despite their efforts a large group has forced its way through and are in Trafalgar Square. More officers are being deployed.

“The group that forced its way through the police line is now held at the north west corner of Trafalgar Square. Anyone in that group should now disperse and leave the area. Anyone remaining in breach of the conditions, or inciting further breaches, will be arrested.”

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel is a “hopeful development” but also warned that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has a “long record” of violating ceasefire agreements.

“Everyone should do their part to prevent a return to the past in Gaza, and constant pressure should be put on Israel,” Erdogan said at a ruling party congress on Saturday.

Erdogan also addressed Turkey’s relationship with the new Syrian administration and praising its “inclusive” approach.

“We will provide all kinds of support so that Syria can become whole, strong, and prosperous again,” Erdogan said.

Speakers at the pro-Palestine protest in central London have announced they will walk peacefully from the stage near Downing Street to the BBC.

They added that if police stop them “which they probably will”, they will leave flowers at their feet “to mark their complicity”.

Seven people have been arrested at a pro-Palestine rally in central London, as hundreds gathered amid a heavy police presence.

A man was arrested on suspicion of holding a placard suggesting support for banned organisations, while four people were arrested on suspicion of public order offences and two others on suspicion of breaching conditions put in place for the protest.

One of the conditions prevents anyone involved in the protest from entering a specific area around Portland Place.

A masked protester wearing a Celtic football tracksuit was seen being handcuffed by police and escorted away from the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) rally in Whitehall, with a large group following with megaphones and chanting: “Let him go.”

Also at Saturday’s protest, a woman was laid on the ground as a group of police officers appeared to be detaining her, prompting a large crowd to surround the officers and shout “you’re a disgrace”, “shame on you” and “let her go”.

A minor scuffle broke out as police attempted to push protesters away before officers took the woman behind some barriers while people continued to chant “let her go”.

The Israeli army said it conducted strikes on 50 “terror targets” across the Gaza Strip on Friday, according to a statement by the army on Saturday.

It comes amid reports that five members of the same family were killed inside a “humanitarian zone” inside the beseiged enclave, and that another Palestinian was killed near Khan Younis.

23 Palestinians were killed and 83 were injured over the past 24 hours, a ministry statement said.

A ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas is expected to come into effect at 8:30am local time on Sunday, seeing the release dozens of hostages held in Gaza and hundreds of Palestinians imprisoned by Israel.

The long fought-for deal, divided into three phases of 42 days each, was approved by the Israeli cabinet with a majority of 24 ministers in favour and eight against in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Many hope it will bring an end to the devastating 15-month conflict, which has claimed the lives of over 46,000 Palestinians in Gaza and more than 1,000 in Israel.

Yemen’s Houthis said they will coordinate closely with the Palestinian resistance to deal with Israel in case of any violations to the Gaza ceasefire deal, the militant group’s military spokesperson said on Saturday.

The Israeli cabinet approved the deal in the early hours of Saturday morning local time, which the Qatari prime minister announced as a three-phase agreement, set to take effect on Sunday. It will include the release of hostages still held in Gaza in exchange for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.

The US, Egypt and Qatar have repeatedly tried to secure a ceasefire ever since the conflict began on 7 October 2023, with both Israel and Hamas rejecting multiple draft proposals.
