Has Keir Starmer allowed UK Armed Forces to become a laughing stock? | Politics | News

Sir Keir Starmer has come under attack from Donald Trump over his initial refusal to allow British bases to be used in the US-Israeli attack on Iran while the Government has been criticised for failing to protect RAF Akrotiri from a drone attack.

Lord West of Spithead has said the Royal Navy alone is in the most “parlous state” it has been in for 60 years. He said it is too small and does not “deliver what the nation needs”.

The Prime Minister insisted on Thursday that he is “satisfied” the UK can keep its people safe amid accusations of dithering and a lack of UK preparedness in the conflict.

The state of Britain’s Armed Forces and the UK’s response to the war in the Middle East sparked a fierce political row this week.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage said the UK was “humiliated” over the Government’s response to the conflict, which erupted on Saturday (February 28).

He accused previous Conservative governments of running down Britain’s Armed Forces in “a virtually criminal way”.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch told the BBC that the UK should listen to concerns from allies in the region, where Britain “used to be a powerful force”.

She accused Sir Keir in Parliament on Wednesday of prioritising his job security over Britain’s national security.

To which Sir Keir replied: “Moments like this define a Leader of the Opposition. They can they can either step up, act in the national interest and show that they’re fit to be prime minister. Or they can expose their utter irrelevance – she has chosen the second.”
