A Green Party MP has been slammed for urging Brits hanging up  St George’s flags to “give their heads a wobble” and “do things that will actually get our country back”. Hannah Spencer, who was elected MP for Gorton and Denton in the February by-election, made the claims in a resurfaced video initially posed on X in September 2025. Walking down a street lined with England flags, which became a controversial expression of patriotism during last year’s Operation Raise the Colours campaign, Ms Spencer said those pouring their time and effort into the displays should instead use it to help out in their communities.

“Those flags go for miles, they’re all evenly spaced, they’re all the same height,” she said. “If you’re using your time and your tools and your practical skills because you want your country back … come and volunteer at our monthly clean-ups, come and join the gardening group, come and fix the broken fencing that needs repairing.” Her suggestion that those putting up St George’s flags should “give their heads a wobble” was met with fresh online anger this week, as Brits took part in an annual celebration of the patron saint on April 23.

One person branded her “disgraceful and unpatriotic” and urged her to “pack up and f*** off somewhere other than the UK to live if our flag offends you”.

Another said: “Proud English people make the time because they love this country and enjoy seeing the flag waving. It’s even better when it triggers the people who despise that pride.”

Both the St George’s Flag and the Union Jack became contentious symbols last summer when they began appearing across the country alongside protests outside asylum seeker hotels, sparking criticisms of xenophobia and racism.

He warned of “voices both here and abroad who would seek to divide us, who want to set us apart from each other” and who stoke “a toxic culture of hatred between different individuals, different groups, different communities”.

Sir Keir added: “We reject their division completely, and we will fly our flag proudly. It’s our flag. It belongs to us, and we will fly it for the values that we believe in.”
