Zack Polanski faces fresh fury after suggesting police were heavy hand | Politics | News
Green Party leader Zack Polanski faces fresh fury after seemingly backing criticism of the police detaining the Golders Green attacker.
Mr Polanski shared a social media post stating “officers were repeatedly and violently kicking a mentally ill man in the head”.
The move sparked outrage on Thursday morning, with critics claiming it “shows why his Green Party is so dangerous”.
Scotland Yard has praised its “brave” officers for tackling the knifeman and released footage of them taking him down using a Taser.
They were seen kicking him in the head in a bid to get the assailant to drop the knife.
But Mr Polanski reposted an X comment that said: “So essentially his officers were repeatedly and violently kicking a mentally ill man in the head when he was already incapacitated by a Taser.”
Home Office minister Mike Tapp said: “I’m disgusted that anyone with this view is leading any political party. The Green Party has hit a new low.”
Labour MP David Taylor: “Zack Polanski’s sympathy for a marauding antisemitic terrorist rather than his victims shows why his Green Party is so dangerous. “How can anyone watch that video from Golders Green and not feel proud of the way those brave police officers wrestled with the attacker who would not let go of his knife?
“Those officers deserve a medal. They put all regard to their own safety aside to protect the public.
“They had no idea whether the man had a bomb in his backpack or not. Yet Polanski thinks they were too tough on this terrorist. Whose side is he on?”
Fellow Labour backbencher Jonathan Hinder, a former police officer, added: “This is so telling. Polanski hates the brave police officers who stopped this.
“He’s more concerned about the antisemitic terrorist with a knife in his hand!”
Tory MP Neil O’Brien blasted: “As usual, the Greens’ sympathies are with the terrorist rather than the brave police officers stopping him.”
The attacker, who had a history of ‘serious violence’, launched himself at an elderly man next to a bus stop and repeatedly stabbed him.
He also stabbed another man, in his 30s, and charged at “everyone around him”, including police officers.
The victims were last night named as Nachman Moshe ben Chaya Sarah and Moshe Ben Baila. They were said to be stable in hospital last night.
And the alleged extremist was seen lurching towards police officers before he was Tasered and pinned to the ground.
Two officers fired Tasers and the suspect, who was wearing a blue puffer jacket and a rucksack, eventually collapsed to the ground.
They could be heard urgently shouting “get down on the ground” and “take the Taser”.
Once the suspect was on the video, one of the officers knelt on top of him, while the other continued to use his Taser and more police surrounded them.
The officer, still on his feet, repeatedly yelled “drop the knife”, “drop the f****** knife” while the suspect struggled on the floor.
While the suspect was pinned face down in the middle of the road, the officers appeared to jostle with him, sounding increasingly panicked.
A plain-clothed man, possibly a member of the Jewish community security team, eventually wrenched the knife from the suspect’s hand.
The suspect then had his hands handcuffed behind his back while still lying in the road, and was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
Yonathan, a Shomrim officer who heroically helped detain the alleged terrorist, said: “I managed to block him off and with the police we managed to put him down.
“It’s very difficult to juggle someone with a knife and try to protect others, take him down and try to protect yourself as well.
“I did my best.
“He was going at everyone around him, including myself. At one point, he made contact with me, and came at me with a knife.
“He was going at the policeman, he was going at someone else. You go forward to try and block him, but then you go back because he’s coming towards you with a knife.”
Another of the Shomrim heroes declared: “He was on a mission”.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said “an attack on our Jewish community is an attack on all of us”.
“What we saw last night was people being targeted because they are Jewish, I’m absolutely clear about that,” the Prime Minister told a meeting with criminal justice agencies in Downing Street following the double stabbing in Golders Green on Wednesday.
“There’s no getting away from the fact that this was not a one-off.
“This has been a series of attacks on our Jewish community, particularly in recent weeks, and there is a very deep sense of anxiety, of concern about security, about safety, about identity frankly.”
He continued that “we have to understand” the “visceral feeling” among many British Jews, “and we have to be really clear that an attack on our Jewish community is an attack on all of us and we have to approach it in that way.”
Sir Keir said solidarity with the Jewish community was often voiced after such attacks.
“We do stand with our Jewish community – of course we do – but it’s our fight as well. It’s the fight of everyone in this country.”
