Fury as ex-European youth MP demands London rent caps | Politics | News
A Green Party politician has sparked fury after declaring landlords should not make a profit off rental properties as he demanded a draconian ยฃ600 rent cap on two-bedroom flats.
20-year-old former European Youth Parliament member, Dylan Law, the Green Party candidate for Deputy Mayor of Hackney, took aim at landlords in the borough where some 30% of locals rent privately.
His extraordinary plan would mean a drop of nearly ยฃ2,000 per month for landlords, with property websites showing the average rent in the area for a two-bedroom flat is around ยฃ2,600.
Experts branded the move “dangerous”, with Maxwell Marlow of the Adam Smith Institute commenting online that left-wing politicians had a “misunderstanding of economics”.
The Green Party, which just secured the borough-wide Mayoralty in the normally Labour-run area, have long campaigned for rent caps despite economists saying they don’t work.
Mr Law told the online news channel PoliticsJoe: “I don’t see why any landlords are making a profit off rent or housing.”
He added that renting was “my human right” as he was “paying just to maintain a home”.
The eco-populist politician said: “If it has to be a thing where a two bedroom flat is ยฃ600 maximum, then it is what it has to be.”
In a warning to landlords, he said “tough luck” to those who complained, accusing them of “going around playing with people’s lives”.
Mr Law previously was a member of the Hackney Youth Parliament, and is a youth leader and campaigner in the borough.
According to his online profiles he has also served as a member of the European Youth Parliament, and is currently a student.
Critics have warned rent caps drive landlords out of the market, reduce housing supply and ultimately make life harder for tenants.
The Green Party’s Hackney victory came as Zack Polanski’s party made gains across London, capitalising on Labour’s woes and squeezing Sir Keir Starmer’s once rock-solid capital vote.
