King of the North? More like King of U-turns โ and Andy Burnham’s at it again | Politics | News
Andy Burnham is more king of the U-turns than king of the north. In his quest to conquer Starmer the Manchester Mayor and would-be PM is at it again – this time on immigrants and benefits in yet another 180-degree turn! This is the same Andy Burnham, lest we forget, who already reversed his positions on the EU, declaring he was โnot advocatingโ for rejoining the bloc, having said last year he wanted to see the UK get back in.
The same Andy Burnham once said he would change the Chancellor’s fiscal rules only to rule this out only a few weeks later. What changed? Burnham also changed his stance on trans rights. The would-be Makerfield MP previously said biological men who identified as women should be able to use female toilets but recently supported a new understanding on single-sex spaces.
The Crown Prince of Labour has apparently dropped his previous support for immigrants being given immediate access to benefits. This is the same man who repeatedly opposed the no recourse to public funds policy banning immigrants from benefits until they have indefinite leave to remain.
It’s almost as if Burnham will say whatever he needs to say to win votes, not least in the Brexit-supporting Makerfield and Red Wall.
How else do we explain these Road to Damascus moments? For instance, the Leftist leader recently told folks in Makerfield net migration needs to โfall furtherโ.
More to the point he even expressed support for the Home Secretary’s policy of doubling the amount of time it took for immigrants to qualify for permanent residency.
Guess what? This represented yet another U-turn! Burnham previously said such plans would leave people โin a sense of limbo and unable to integrateโ.
Come on: will the real Andy Burnham please stand up?
Who exactly are the folks of Makerfield voting for? Blairite Burnham? Brownite Burnham? Hard Left Burnham? Soft Left Burnham? Rejoiner Burnham? Brexity Burnham?
Compared to the conviction and consistency of Nigel Farage, this kind of flakiness should spook us all, not least his fanboys and girls in the Labour movement. The last thing Britain needs is another turncoat. Yet if Burnham wins Makerfield and is coronated Prime Minister that is exactly what we will get.
