Starmer’s pile-on begins as first minister tells PM tells PM to resign | Politics | News

it is understood that a Cabinet member has told Kier starmer to step down as Prime Minister following Andy Burnham’s by-election win. Secretary of State for Transport, Heidi Alexander, has become the first Labour MP to do so. Burnham recently won the by-election in Makerfield, prompting Alexander to tell the PM to step aside. She is one of the MPs who voted for Burnham to become leader of the Labour Party the first time he tried in 2010.

When he ran for the position again in 2015, she also backed him. Despite calls for his resignation, Keir Starmer has said he will fight to keep his position as Prime Minister. Burnham is expected to launch a war of leadership for the prime spot to lead the party, with Starmer telling media that he did not plan to “walk away” following Burnham’s victory. At a recent rally before his Makerfield win, Burnham told attendees that a new Labour leader could “open up the space for the real change the people of this constituency deserve”.

Around 45,000 people went to the ballot box in the by-election on Thursday, with the results announced just after 3am on Friday.

Laying out his plans, Burnham called for an end to “trickle down economics” and a new drive to reindustrialise the North of England, alongside a massive change in Whitehall procurement to back British business.

Mr Burnham adds that education must not be “dominated by the University route” and must focus instead on getting people in work.

Just weeks ago, Josh Simons resigned his seat so that Mr Burnham could try and run for Prime Minister. “I know you did it for all of the right reasons,” Burnham said.

He told reporters: โ€œThere isnโ€™t a leadership contest at the moment, there isnโ€™t one at the moment, but as Iโ€™ve said on many, many occasions, I donโ€™t think thatโ€™s a good thing for the country, to plunge us into chaos.

“I would also add that now that Andy has won which is really important, really good, heโ€™s a huge asset to us, that now there will inevitably be a Manchester mayoralty by-election starting straight away.

“Itโ€™s important that we pull together for that, but if there is a contest, just to be clear with you, then yes, I will run.”
