Wes Streeting has backed Andy Burnham to be the UKโ€™s next Prime Minister. Mr Streeting, a former Health Secretary, said: โ€œI hope that everyone else will back Andy too.โ€ It means that Mr Burnham is now almost certain to walk into Number 10 as Prime Minister without a leadership contest, because Mr Streeting was seen as his main challenger. Sir Keir Starmer announced his resignation this morning.

Mr Burnham also confirmed that he will stand as leader. Sir Keir Starmerโ€™s resignation โ€œmarks the beginning of a transitionโ€, Andy Burnham has said, adding he will โ€œput myself forward as part of this processโ€. It’s still possible that another candidate could attempt to stand, although they will need nominations from 81 Labour MPs to do so. However, if it turns out that Mr Burnham is the only candidate then the whole process is likely to be over by around July 12 – when Sir Keir will officially stand down and Mr Burnham will move into Number 10.

Announcing he would bid for the party leadership, Mr Burnham said Sir Keirโ€™s resignation โ€œmarks the beginning of a transitionโ€.

He said: โ€œKeir has given huge service to our country and I want to thank him for his leadership and dedication during such a challenging period.

โ€œHis decision marks the beginning of a transition and it is important that this process is conducted in an orderly and responsible way. I will put myself forward as part of this process.

โ€œThe country expects stability, seriousness and a continued focus on the issues that matter most and that is what it will get.

โ€œAs we move forward, our priority must be to work together to get the country back to where we all want it to be. People want to see progress on economic growth, cost of living, public services, housing and opportunities for the next generation. Political change should never distract from the responsibility to improve peopleโ€™s lives.

โ€œThe Labour movement has always been at its strongest when it looks forward with confidence and purpose. This is what we will do from here and we will make sure this transition is a positive process of renewal for our party and our country.โ€

Mr Streeting, who had been viewed as Andy Burnhamโ€™s main rival for the Labour leadership, said he would back the new Makerfield MP for the job.

He said he had โ€œspoken at length with Andy in recent daysโ€.

Mr Streeting said he was convinced that Mr Burnham โ€œis committed to building an inclusive party that draws on the best of our political traditions and that he can win the fight of our lives against the force of nationalismโ€.

Calling for a coronation for Mr Burnham, he said: โ€œWe could spend the summer exaggerating small differences, or we can roll up our sleeves and help him to deliver the change our party and our country needs.

โ€œThat is the choice that I am making and I hope that everyone else will back Andy too.โ€

Andy Burnham was seen on his way to London after catching a train from Manchester.

He arrived at the Manchester station wearing a T-shirt and jeans and carrying a small suitcase.

Mr Burnham was accompanied by two uniformed police officers.

โ€œThank you everyone,โ€ he replied when reporters asked if there would be a Labour leadership contest or a coronation.
