Sir Keir Starmer has said he and Donald Trump will “stay in touch” after he leaves No 10 in a sign that their up and down bromance will continue.

The Prime Minister said he “got on well” with the US president and that this would continue.

His warm words come just days after Mr Trump said the UK is a country in decline because of the Labour leader’s “weak leadership”.

But Sir Keir said he was not going to be “tempted” into criticising the president and suggested they get along better than people think.

“Having resisted so far, I’m not going to be tempted at the last hurdle into starting commenting on what other people may say or not,” he told reporters at the NATO summit in Ankara.

“As far as President Trump is concerned, we have got along really well.

“There’s no doubt about that, and we will, and we discussed a moment ago, we’ll stay in touch.

“That is important in terms of the relationship between the UK and the US, because it is a really important strategic relationship for the UK.”

Sir Keir and Mr Trump initially got on well following the American’s to the White House after the November 2024 US election.

The pair described each other as “friends” when the Prime Minister visited Washington the following January.

During their Oval Office meeting, Sir Keir gave Mr Trump a letter from King Charles, inviting him to the UK for a second state visit.

But their relationship soured following clashes over tariffs, Greenland and Sir Keir’s Chagos Islands “surrender”.

Mr Trump has also lambasted the PM over North Sea drilling, wind farms and immigration.

The US president said he will fly an old Air Force One plane from Turkey to ‌the UK “for old time’s sake”.

Posting on his Truth Social site, the president said a newly ⁠overhauled Air Force One will also fly to RAF Mildenhall on the way back from the NATO summit in Ankara so US service members stationed there can tour the aircraft.

The site is often used as a refuelling base for US aircraft.
