Grenadian police said Tuesday that their nearly week-old search for a missing North Carolina woman is still active, with hopes of finding the swimmer alive.

Elizabeth “Liz” Waddell, a 44-year-old Cary resident, was last seen going out for a swim at Grand Anse Beach on Wednesday, the Royal Grenada Police Force said.

“At this time, the matter continues, continues to be treated as a missing person investigation,” acting Commissioner of Police Randy Connaught told reporters on Tuesday. “I repeat, at this time, the matter continues to be treated as a missing person.”

Surveillance cameras captured Waddell walking on a jetty near the water at 11:36 a.m. the morning she went missing, Connaught said.

She went into the water at 11:51 a.m. and more footage captured her swimming under the jetty at 12:04 p.m., the police official said.

Witnesses have told investigators they later saw Waddell in the open water, police said.

Waddell’s traveling partner was captured on surveillance cameras on the beach at 12:46 p.m. and she reported the swimmer missing to police at 5:50 p.m., Connaught added.

“There is nothing questionable about her account of the investigations and we continue to receive cooperation from her,” Connaught said of the traveling companion.

Even though Waddell hasn’t been seen in nearly six days, police said they still seek to rescue her.

“It is our hope that Elizabeth will be found and found alive and well,” Connaught said. “The Royal Grenada Police Force remains equally hopeful that she will be safe and that she is safe.”

Local police had been appealing to fishermen, boat operators and residents along the southern coastline to keep their eyes peeled for medium build woman with short blonde hair.

Waddell and her friend first arrived in Grenada, the island nation in the eastern Caribbean Sea that’s about 100 miles north of Venezuela, on July 11.

The missing woman’s husband has since come to the island to help in the search effort, officials said.

“Any bit of information will do at this time, and we do hope that we can locate Elizabeth very soon,” Connaught said. “Again, we empathize with the family, relatives, and friends, and we are hopeful that Elizabeth will be found alive. Thank you.”
