Asda returns to growth for first time in two years amid major turnaround plan
Asda has revealed that sales are on track to grow for the first time in two years, despite pressure on household budgets caused by the broader economic environment.
The private equity-backed supermarket chain stated that it remains in the “foothills of recovery” as it moves forward with a major turnaround strategy.
Boss Allan Leighton suggested that the company has now completed roughly one third of this restructuring process.
Speaking to members of the press, he noted that the groupโs current position aligns with his expectations since assuming control in late 2024, marking a return to Asdaโs top job 25 years after he previously headed up the business.
โWe have been very consistent with the fact the turnaround will take between three and five years,โ Mr Leighton said.
โWhenever someone says that they think it is taking a long time, I make it clear that for something of this scale, this is just how long it takes.โ

It came as Asda reported that sales returned to growth for the current quarter for the first time in two years.
Like-for-like sales for the first seven weeks of the current quarter, excluding fuel, have risen by 0.2 per cent.
The company said it is therefore narrowing the gap against its largest supermarket rivals, having seen its share of the UK market decline in recent years.
On Friday, the Leeds-based chain reported revenues of ยฃ5.1 billion for the second quarter of 2026.
It said like-for-like sales were 2.3 per cent lower for the quarter, with food sales down 1.9 per cent for the period.
Mr Leighton added: โWe saw momentum build in Q2 with stable market share, and weโre now seeing that translate into more customers choosing Asda.
โWhile this progress is encouraging, we are still in the foothills of recovery.
โThereโs still more work to do as we focus on building a stronger business for the long term.โ
Michael Gleeson, Asdaโs chief financial officer, said: โA challenging geopolitical and economic backdrop continued to weigh on consumer confidence and household budgets during Q2.
โDespite these pressures, our continued investment in price and the overall customer proposition means we continue to make steady progress in our turnaround journey.โ
In May, Asda revealed plans to partner with retail technology giant Ocado in a bid to improve its online grocery service for customers.
