In January, the U.S. military carried out an operation to capture Venezuelaโ€™s President Nicolรกs Maduro to face federal narcoterrorism and drug trafficking charges in the U.S.

Trump is facing increasing pressure as the midterms loom and gas prices have spiked because of the war with Iran, which the U.S. and Israel started exactly six months ago.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio touted the deal as a โ€œhuge winโ€ for both the U.S. and Venezuela in a post on X.

โ€œIt demonstrates how President Trumpโ€™s bold foreign policy is driving America First wins: securing stable reserves and low-cost oil in our Hemisphere and lowering gas prices here at home,โ€ he wrote. โ€œFor the Venezuelan people, this deal will bring nearly $100 billion in private investment, support thousands of high-paying jobs, and drive the reconstruction of Venezuelaโ€™s economy.โ€

Venezuela has among the largest oil reserves in the world, with an estimated 303 billion barrels of crude oil in the ground. Thatโ€™s about 17% of the worldโ€™s supply, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Unlike other parts of the world, where geologists have to search for untapped oil, the reserves under Venezuelaโ€™s soil are largely mapped and known, experts say. But because of dilapidated infrastructure, the country only produces about 1% of the worldโ€™s oil.
