Poundland could face insolvency and being broken up as the company brought in to steer the UK discount retailer through its emergency sale process are on the brink of resignation, less than two weeks after they were recruited.

Poundlandโ€™s owner, Gordon Brothers, is understood to be moving away from utilising the main solvent after a disagreement with a trio of board members from Martin Property Group.

As a result, Poundland is increasingly likely to be broken up if it is placed into insolvency proceedings, according to sources speaking to Sky News, who said the trio had expressed discontent at Brothersโ€™ attempts to move the company into the process.

Brothers – which bought the company for ยฃ1 in 2025 – is understood to believe that a ยฃ30million shareholder loan is more likely to be repaid in full if Poundland is broken up into segments.

Martin Property Group is said to have offered full payment of the sum on its existing term, but Brothers has expressed concern that Poundland could be liquidated before the offered date, meaning it would miss out on full repayment.

If it comes to fruition, insolvency would threaten thousands of high street jobs. Poundland currently employs more than 12,000 people and trades from around 600 stores across the UK, and if it does collapse, would be among the biggest high street names to dissolve for years.

Brothers is now assessing a number of other bids, largely from retail rivals, which would involve buying parts of the Poundland business and ultimately see the company enter insolvency.

A spokesman for Gordon Brothers said: โ€œWhile Martin Property Group had been identified as the preferred bidder by Poundlandโ€™s management team, attention must now turn to other active bids.

โ€œAs well as interest from buyers for the whole business, the sale process has surfaced a number of formal and indicative offers for significant viable parts of the business from established retail operatorsโ€.

Wilko and The Range owner CDS Superstores, Poundstretcher owner Fortress and TG Jones owner Modella are all among companies interested in buying parts of the retailer.

โ€œThese options will now be objectively evaluated, with a view to minimising uncertainty for Poundlandโ€™s people and all relevant stakeholders,โ€ the spokesperson added.
