New poll shows how few Brits think Keir Starmer’s doing a good job | Politics | News

Just 16% of Brits think the country is going in the right direction.
Exclusive Ipsos polling shows optimism about the future of Britain has nosedived since Labour took power.
Sixty-two per cent now think the UK is going in the wrong direction.
Back in May 2021, nearly half of Brits (47%) thought the nation was heading in the right direction. But this had fallen to just 25% by July last year and has since slumped a further nine points.
The respondents delivered a damning verdict on Labourโs record in power so far.
When asked to grade the party on a scale of one to 10, the average score was a mere 3.7.
The 18-24 age group was the most generous, giving Labour five out of 10. But the 35-64 group gave Sir Keir Starmer and his team just 3.7, and the verdict of the 65-pluses was only 2.8.
The research shows that even Labour voters are unimpressed. They gave the Government a grade of 5.6.
This was more generous than supporters of the Liberal Democrats (4.3), the Conservatives (2.0) and Reform UK (1.4).
The findings come as the latest Techne poll shows just 25% of voters would back Labour in an immediate election, with 24% supporting the Conservatives, 24% behind Reform UK, 13% backing the Liberal Democrats and seven per cent opting for the Greens.
A Labour MP was not surprised to see the party doing so badly and blamed the decision to axe universal winter fuel payments.
โI think the winter fuel payment is absolutely number one from a policy point of view,โ they said. โGenuinely, I think that is probably now an election-losing policy.โ
Nigel Huddleston, the chairman of the Conservative Party, said: โItโs no wonder so many people think this Labour Government is taking the country in the wrong direction. Labour has taken an ideological wrecking ball to Britain โ taxes at record levels, an open door immigration policy and educational vandalism.
โUnder new management, the Conservatives will rebuild trust and show thereโs another way to make our country more resilient, secure and prosperous.โ
Reform UK MP Lee Anderson said: โWhen a Government betrays its people, raises taxes, freezes pensioners and fails to control illegal immigration, public frustration and anger are the outcome. By every measure of success, the UK is falling short.
โThis country needs a Government that prioritises its citizens above all else.โ
