Almost 700 migrants cross Channel in 48 hours as ‘summer of chaos’ warning issued | Politics | News
Almost 700 small boat migrants have arrived in Britain in the past two days amid warnings of a “summer of chaos”. Some 287 people made the dangerous journey across the Channel in four boats on Saturday as people smugglers took advantage of the heatwave, while a further 394 came in six boats on Friday.
And more made the crossing today with migrants pictured making gestures after boarding a dinghy in Dunkirk, France. The Tories warned that Sir Keir Starmer’s government has “no border control” following the latest arrivals.
Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp said: โSeven hundred illegal immigrants crossed the channel on Friday and Saturday, with more flooding in on Sunday.
“This spell of good weather has exposed the fact that Shabana Mahmood and Labour have no border control.
“They are more interested in their leadership squabbles than keeping out illegal immigrants. We face a tidal wave of illegal immigrants this summer as a result.
โLabour has returned only 7% of small boat illegal immigrants because they refuse to leave the ECHR. With 93% allowed to stay, no wonder they keep coming.
โOnly through the Conservative Partyโs BORDERS plan can end the crossings. We will ban asylum claims for illegal immigrants, leave the ECHR, and stop the courts intervening to allow illegal immigrants to stay.
“This will enable small boat illegal immigrants to all be deported within a week of arrival – back to their country of origin if possible or a safe third country if not. Then the crossings will soon stop. But Labour is too weak to do this.โ
Reform UK’s home affairs spokesman Zia Yusuf warned of a “summer of chaos”.
He said: โWhat we are witnessing is a summer of chaos unfolding before our eyes and a Labour government which has completely lost control of the situation. Only Reform Uk will stop the boats and deport every single illegal migrant.โ
The new arrivals take the total number of small boat migrants so far this year to more than 8,000.
