5 Things you need to know about Peter Mandelson quitting the House of Lords

  • He will keep his title, because a peerage is bestowed for life – unless the Government changes the law.
  • The pressure on Mandelson to quit the Lords came after files released by the US Department of Justice apparently showed Lord Mandelson passing material to Jeffrey Epstein while serving as business secretary in Gordon Brownโ€™s Labour government, as it dealt with the 2008 financial crash and its aftermath.
  • Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer told his Cabinet that the alleged transmission of highly-sensitive government business to Epstein was โ€œdisgracefulโ€ and Lord Mandelson had โ€œlet his country downโ€.
  • The Cabinet Office has referred material to the police after an initial review of Epstein files documents showed they may contain market-sensitive information and suggested that โ€œsafeguards were compromisedโ€, No 10 said.
