‘Only a bad person would ask a question like that’

Rather than address a local television reporter’s legitimate question about concerns expressed by flood victims, President Donald Trump erupted at the journalist and turned to the comforting tones of a pair of sycophants he’d brought along in the press pool.

When the journalist, who works for a local CBS affiliate, informed the president that families of victims were “obviously upset” because emergency alerts “didn’t go out in time” on the night of the floods, Trump lost his temper, telling her: “Only a bad person would ask a question like that, to be honest with you, I don’t know who you are, but only a very evil person would ask a question like that.”

He claimed the flood, which was similar to another damaging event that occurred in the same area in 1987, was a thing that had “never happened before” and said he’d “never seen anything like this” before calling for the next question from Brian Glenn, the political commentator who is the boyfriend of Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

A reporter asked President Donald Trump: โ€œSeveral families we’ve heard from are obviously upset, because they say that those warnings, those alerts, didn’t go out in time, and they also say that people could have been safe. What do you say to those families?โ€

Hereโ€™s the presidentโ€™s answer:

Having met with families who lost children and some of the survivors, in her remarks, First Lady Melania Trump said she would return to the area in the future to meet with them.

The first lady said: โ€œMy deepest sympathy to all of the parents who have young souls, deepest sympathy for all of us, to the community, to everybody who lost a loved one. We are grieving with you. Our nation is grieving with you. We just met with the wonderful families. We pray with them, we hug, we hold hands. They share the stories. And I met beautiful young ladies. They gave me this special bracelet … in honor of all of the little girls that they lost their lives.โ€

She added: โ€œSo we are here to honor them and also to give them support, help, and I will be back. I promise to them, and I just pray for them and giving them my strength and love.โ€

President Donald Trump is speaking at a roundtable for first responders and local officials following last weekโ€™s deadly flash flood in Kerr County, Texas.

The president said: โ€œI’ve never seen anything like it. I’ve seen a lot of bad ones. I’ve gone to a lot of hurricanes, a lot of tornadoes. I’ve never seen anything like this. This is there’s a bad one. We just visited with incredible families that, I mean, look, they’ve been devastated. They lost their child, or two children, and just hard to believe what I’ve never seen anything like it a little narrow river that becomes a monster, and that’s what happened.โ€

He continued: โ€œBut the First Lady and I are here in Texas to express the love and support and the anguish of our entire nation in the aftermath of this really horrific and deadly flood.โ€

Where is the acting head of FEMA in the Texas flood aftermath?

He was not on the manifest for todayโ€™s Air Force One flight from Washington, D.C., and has not visited the scene of the devastating flood so far this week.

Will he be at todayโ€™s roundtable?

Hereโ€™s Gustaf Kilander reporting on his absence from the public eye:
