Hannah Hampton out of England’s Brazil friendly with elbow injury, Sarina Wiegman says

Hannah Hampton has an elbow injury which will rule the England No 1 out of their friendly against Brazil on Saturday, head coach Sarina Wiegman said.

Wiegman explained at her pre-match press conference that the 24-year-old Chelsea keeper will remain with the national team where “she’ll be modified”.

Brighton goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley has been called into the squad as a replacement, joining Manchester City’s Khiara Keating and Orlando Pride’s Anna Moorehouse. None of the keepers have made their competitive debut for England yet.

“I have made the decision (on who will start tomorrow),” Wiegman said on Friday, when asked about who will replace Hampton. “But as always, we have to get through this session.

“Then, of course, I inform the team first before I inform you.”

Hampton joins Arsenal defender Lotte Wubben-Moy and Manchester United forward Jess Park in being unavailable for Saturday’s friendly, with Wubben-Moy leaving camp due to feeling “unwell”. Park returned to United earlier in the week under concussion protocol.

“I think it’s really good that we have four friendlies over this couple of months,” Wiegman added. “What you also want to do is try out new things, see players, see different combinations. So that’s a huge opportunity. It’s necessary also, of course, because we have some injuries.”

England will also face Australia, China and Ghana before the end of the year, as they look ahead to the next World Cup in 2027.

Chelsea’s Hampton has served as England’s No 1 since replacing Paris Saint-Germain’s Mary Earps ahead of the summer’s European Championship. She was named the world’s best female goalkeeper at the 2025 Ballon d’Or ceremony after her penalty-saving heroics helped England win Euro 2025, saving two penalties in the shoot-out victory over Sweden in the quarter-final and against Spain in the final.

Hampton has made 22 appearances for England since starting in England’s 0–0 draw with Spain in the 2022 Arnold Clark Cup.
