Donald Trump ‘confirms Keir Starmer quitting’ with 3-sentence comment | Politics | News
Donald Trump has said Sir Keir Starmer “will resign” as Prime Minister, while taking a swipe at him “for failing badly on two very important subjects”. While he claimed to “wish him well”, the US President took to his social media platform Truth Social to slam the UK Prime Minister for his handling of immigration and energy.
He wrote: “Keir Starmer will resign as Prime Minister of The United Kingdom. He failed badly on two very important subjects- IMMIGRATION AND ENERGY (OPEN NORTH SEA OIL!). I wish him well! President DJT.” This comes amid growing calls for Sir Keir to step aside following Andy Burnham’s victory in Makerfield on Thursday.
A Government source told The Telegraph that instead of rallying around him, several ministers are understood to have urged him to give a timeframe for his departure.
They said: “He was reaching out to people who perhaps two months ago he thought were locked in, but could now potentially be wavering. More Cabinet ministers than not told him that he needs to set out a timetable.
“As a result of the list of names and the wobbly ring round, Keir will realise the game is up and the next few days will be about shoring up his legacy.”
Chancellor Rachel Reeves remains one of the few senior Cabinet figures still publicly backing Sir Keir, who is understood to be spending the weekend with his family as he weighs his options.
As of Saturday, Downing Street maintained that he would not be going anywhere.
