Hard-left Green Party leader Zack Polanski goaded Keir Starmer over his plummeting popularity, claiming Labour might have to “stand aside” for his insurgent group.

Mr Polanski, who is seeking to pick off Left-wing Labour supporters, said he doesn’t “think” Sir Keir will be Prime Minister at the next election.

He even questioned whether the PM would still be an MP in 2029.

And the controversial leader said he would be more willing to work with Labour if it was led by someone like Nadia Whittome, who voted against the proscription of Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation.

Mr Polanski told Sky News’s Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips programme: “A poll out yesterday showed the majority of the population have completely lost trust in Keir Starmer; now this is a man who ran on the coattails of Jeremy Corbyn but ditched every single pledge before he was even in power.

“We’ve got the two-child benefit cap, the disability cuts, the genocide in Gaza – no, Keir Starmer is not a man I would be willing to work with.”

It would was put the Greens leader that a division on the left could let Reform UK into Number 10.

He replied that a recent poll put Greens three points ahead of Labour and therefore “the real question you should be asking Keir Starmer is: will he stand aside to make sure that Nigel Farage isn’t prime minister?

“I don’t think Keir Starmer will be the prime minister at the next election – I think it’s another question whether he’ll even be an MP – and so will I work with a future Labour leader? Depends who the future Labour leader is.”

Asked who the Greens might support instead, Mr Polanski said Nottingham East MP Nadia Whittome would be an “excellent leader of the Labour Party, I don’t think it’s something she’s necessarily (got) in her ambitions right now.”

A new poll by Opinium found that the majority of Britons want Sir Keir and Chancellor Rachel Reeves to quit.

More than half of the public (56 per cent) think the Prime Minister should quit, compared to 26 per cent who want Sir Keir to stay.

A similar proportion (57 per cent) think the Chancellor should resign, with only 19 per cent wanting Ms Reeves to stay in post.

It comes as Labour are set to break their manifesto pledges by hiking income tax as they attempt to fill a financial black hole of up to £30bn.

Even a third of Labour voters in 2024 want Sri Keir to resign.

Only two in five (42 per cent) of Labour voters from 2024 supported Ms Reeves remaining in office, whith more than a third (38 per cent) saying she should resign. 

And the shocking poll revealed trust in the pair to handle the economy has plummeted.

Less than a quarter (24 per cent) said Sir Keir could be trusted on the economy, while 65 per cent distrusted the PM. This gave him a net trust score of -41 per cent. 

The Chancellor was trusted on the economy by less than one in five (19 per cent), while 67 per cent distrusted her, giving Ms Reeves a net trust score of -48 per cent.

Tory leader Kemi Badenoch’s net trust score on economic and financial matters was -19 per cent, the same as Reform UK leader Nigel Farage (also -19 per cent).

The latest Opinium research found the Chancellor’s approval rating has fallen by 9 points to net -47 per cent among the public, and she has sunk to net -17 per cent among Labour voters.

Sir Keir’s approval rating remains unchanged at net -45 per cent, as does Mrs Badenoch’s rating at net -17 per cent, while Mr Farage’s approval rating has risen slightly to -10 per cent (up four points).

Mr Farage maintains a slight lead of +3 per cent over Sir Keir in terms of who would be the best PM.
