Sir Keir Starmer has vowed to remain Prime Minister throughout 2026 despite possible attempts to oust him as Labour leader.

The Prime Minister’s rebellious backbench MPs will return to Westminster on Monday when Parliament returns from its Christmas break.

The Labour leader’s popularity in the polls has plunged to an all-time low and follows a major U-turn on farmers’ inheritance tax.

One poll suggests Reform UK would win a majority if a general election were held now.

Sir Keir acknowledged in his new year message that life is still “harder than it should be” for many Britons but he promised more people will begin to feel “a sense of hope” in the coming months.

He insisted the Government will “defeat the decline and division offered by others” by “staying the course” with its efforts to improve public services and the cost of living.

The Prime Minister warned “renewal is not an overnight job”, and said “the challenges we face were decades in the making”.
