Politics LIVE: Starmer scrambling to quell MPs as Parliament returns | Politics | News

Sir Keir Starmer has vowed to remain Prime Minister throughout 2026 despite possible attempts to oust him as Labour leader.

The Prime Minister’s rebellious backbench MPs will return to Westminster on Monday when Parliament returns from its Christmas break.

The Labour leader’s popularity in the polls has plunged to an all-time low and follows a major U-turn on farmers’ inheritance tax.

One poll suggests Reform UK would win a majority if a general election were held now.

Sir Keir acknowledged in his new year message that life is still โ€œharder than it should beโ€ for many Britons but he promised more people will begin to feel โ€œa sense of hopeโ€ in the coming months.

He insisted the Government will โ€œdefeat the decline and division offered by othersโ€ by โ€œstaying the courseโ€ with its efforts to improve public services and the cost of living.

The Prime Minister warned โ€œrenewal is not an overnight jobโ€, and said โ€œthe challenges we face were decades in the makingโ€.
