A huge rescue operation is underway in the English Channel after a migrant ‘mega-dinghy’ allegedly carrying 160 people caught fire during an attempt to cross to the United Kingdom.
British border vessels and lifeboats have raced to the scene off the coast of Boulogne-sur-Mer as fears intensify over another tragedy.
Some 11 vessels are responding to the crisis.
The situation could result in the British vessels docking in France, to allow the asylum seekers to receive urgent medical attention.
Migrants rescued in the Channel have claimed there were 160 people on the dinghy, sources say.
