He’s off! PM Andy Burnham that is. Just two weeks after his coronation – and with an extra 2,000 illegal migrants in the country since – Our Andy’s off on his holidays. Or, as Reform chairman Lee Anderson said: “Two weeks into the job and Andy Burnham has already had enough. After dropping a number of unfunded commitments and overseeing over 2,000 illegal migrants breaking into our country he’s bunked off for a jolly abroad. This isn’t a Prime Minister that’s serious about leading.”

Reform’s home affairs spokesman Zia Yusuf has already laid out plans to turf illegal immigrants out and send them back to France, a state which is fast becoming complicit in people trafficking to Britain. In addition, Yusuf criticised Burnham’s planned prison sentencing changes, which will “result in dangerous and violent offenders being let loose on our streets”.

Burnham – perhaps after his much-needed break – is also set to announce he is cutting sentences for sex and grooming offences. By contrast, Reform says it will free up 10,000 prison places by transferring foreign prisoners to their country of origin.

Mind you – lest older voters leaning towards the Tories forget – it was Kemi Badenoch’s Conservative Party which kicked off the early release scheme and, over 14 years, built just 455 net new prison places to cope with 6.5 million immigrants they imported. That was rather than deporting the 10,000 foreign criminals in the UK prison system.

This then is the uniparty in action: Tory failure compounded by Labour! Small boat crossings may have nudged down but one must remember just how vertigo-inducingly high illegal immigration got under the Tories, and how high small boat crossings remain.

The Tories gave us record-breaking immigration, more crime, more debt, and a botched Brexit; they never built enough prison places, they never repealed IR35 rules screwing freelancers and contractors, and they never deport enough foreign crooks. Sorry but the Tories won’t have changed in two years.

Meanwhile Labour can only make a bad situation worse. No wonder Burnham’s off on his hols. Riding high on his honeymoon period, let’s see how cocky Labour will be once its tax-raising budget is announced in late October!
