Aldi will open 16 new stores across the UK, as the discount supermarket continues its expansion.

The German store chain has more than 1,080 shops open across Britain, but aims to have 1,500 in the long term – with the latest additions set to appear across locations such as London, Manchester, Suffolk and even the Isle of Wight.

A total of £370m is expected to be invested in 2026 in new store openings by the retailer, which has consistently topped the list for cheapest supermarkets to shop at in Which?’s consumer guide this year.

Several months ago Aldi had said it hoped to open up to 40 stores in 2026, with one opening in Salford last month.

No firm timetable has been given for the opening of each new supermarket, other than “the coming months” for all 16.

Recent data from Worldpanel by Numerator shows Aldi having the fourth-largest market share in the UK for the 12 months to mid-May, behind Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Asda, holding more than 10 per cent of the total market, just ahead of rival discount store Lidl.

Britons have been concerned this year that food prices are likely to continue rising in the second half of 2026 as energy costs feed through into production and manufacturing, with the Federation of Food and Drink warning food inflation could hit as high as 10 per cent.

Recent data on wider UK inflation holding below expected levels will give hope that the cost of living squeeze may not be as great as initially feared, but food prices are more likely to feel the impact later in the year with energy bills rising, fertiliser costs going up and supply chains facing some disruption.
