‘Angela Rayner must never be PM’ – ‘Obliterated’ Ange leaves onlookers ‘open-mouthed’ | Politics | News
The weight of the office of Prime Minister would destroy Angela Rayner, a political correspondent has claimed. The former Deputy Prime Minister was reportedly so drunk at a late night drinking session in Westminster that she is said to have walked into a door.
The incident, in Stangers Bar in the Houses of Parliament has been dismissed by Raynerโs team, but one, who says he saw it first hand, believes it is indicative of her ill-preparedness for the highest office. Dan Hodges wrote in the Daily Mail: โI was in Strangers’ Bar on Monday. I saw Angela Rayner and spoke to her briefly. The description of one witness of her being ‘absolutely obliterated’ is true. Her condition was witnessed by numerous MPs, journalists, parliamentary staff and guests. The incident of her walking into a door with force is also accurate. I saw it happen with my own eyes.โ
He added: โHer behaviour on Monday was not an aberration. Concerns about her social conduct have been widespread within the Parliamentary Labour Party for some time.โ
Witnesses told the Daily Mail that Angela Rayner collided with a door with a loud bang, with the force of the impact reportedly leaving her briefly “bent over”.
The following day, the entrance door was reportedly removed for repairs, although parliamentary sources insisted the maintenance work was unrelated to the incident. A privacy screen has also now been installed at the doorway of the bar, the Daily Mail reports.
The incident comes just days before Mayโs local elections. The former deputy to Keir Starmer is widely regarded as one of the leading contenders should there be any future shift in the partyโs leadership.
A House of Commons source told the newspaper they “do not recognise” accusations that Ms Rayner caused the bar’s door to break, and that Parliament’s maintenance team is completing a full repair after making the area safe.
Hodges continued: โShe has finely tuned political instinctsโฆBut she cannot become Prime Minister. The weight of office would destroy her. The Government would swiftly collapse in a manner reminiscent of the implosion of the Liz Truss premiership.โ
A spokesperson for Angela Rayner said: “This is a concoction of mischief-making.
“Angela had a glass of wine in Strangers Bar with her friends, and the notion she broke a door is total rubbish.”
The Express has contacted Ms Rayner’s office for comment.
