Angela Rayner warned voters have ‘negative’ view of her after tax row | Politics | News

The Labour firebrand resigned as deputy PM, Housing Secretary and Labour deputy leader last September after it emerged she underpaid stamp duty on a new seaside flat. But she is at the centre of fresh speculation that she could move against the embattled Prime Minister after warning in a speech last week that Labour is “running out of time” to deliver change.

But Mr Tryl, the UK director of More in Common, warned the tax furore had stuck with voters as he shared responses from recent focus groups.

He said: “Rayner had an appeal few politicians do and as deputy reached people Starmer couldnโ€™t.

“But SW1 has a habit of moving on from things before the public have and the tax stuff seems to fall into that. In recent groups the verdict has been fairly negative.”

In responses posted by Mr Tryl, one voter said: “Angela, there’s a lot of baggage there.’

Another added: “I used to really love her, but I don’t think she’s got a hope in hell after what was pulled off with her tax.”

A third said: “Well, she got caught for that. What else is she doing? You know what I mean? What else are they doing, these people who are hiding stuff?”

It comes after Ms Rayner used a speech at an event held by campaign group Mainstream to warn that Labour had come to be seen to represent “the Establishment, not working people”.

She also took aim at the Government’s immigration reforms, which she branded “un-British”.

No 10 insisted that Sir Keir and Ms Rayner still have a good working relationship following her comments.
