Arsenal are back. Against Girona, Kai Havertz opened the scoring after being found nicely by Max Dowman on 16 minutes.

New signing Christos Tzolis doubled the lead on his first public appearance as an Arsenal player (the forward played in a behind-closed-doors friendly against MK Dons before that).

Arsenal’s second half began shakily. The hosts — who they played in the league phase of the 2024-25 Champions League — scored from a corner to make it 2-1.

The scorer, Arnau Martinez, was one of six Girona players who faced Arsenal back in January 2025. However, they are now preparing for a season in the Spanish second division after relegation from La Liga last term.

Arsenal responded quickly, with Dowman scoring a goal that was viewed as controversial by the home fans as one of their players was down injured for an extended period of that passage of play.

Gabriel Jesus made it 4-1 shortly after with a poacher’s finish, the ball having ricocheted into the Girona box from a Ben White challenge in midfield.
