Badenoch bounce isn’t enough to save toxic Tories โ€“ here’s why, in case you’ve forgotten | Politics | News

How bad must the Tory Party have been that Sir Keir Starmer became Prime Minister with a stonking great majority in 2024? Amidst the so-called ‘Badenoch bounce’, voters need reminding why – after nearly 15 years of failure – the Conservatives were unceremoniously booted out to begin with. This is a party which never truly believed in Brexit, and which botched it so badly, that Labour now feels it has a licence to creep back into the EU by the back door.

This is a party which – having campaigned on a promise to slash immigration – did the complete opposite, leaving Labour as a continuity government when it comes to small boat crossings. This is a party which could have left the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) – with all its attendant problems hamstringing the country – but never did.

The Tories – laughably seen as the party of law and order – sat back as our towns and cities became more and more dangerous, especially for young women.

Meanwhile, the party once seen as on the side of small business, never fixed the dreaded IR35 rules impacting contractors and freelancers.

Net debt also rose, and productivity worsened, between 2010 and 2024. Yes, the Tories can point to the financial crisis legacy and Covid. But that doesn’t explain everything. What about chronically low investment during the Tory years?

People of Britain need to remember why the Tories were chucked out in the first place. Who can forget the hypocrisy over lockdowns, the scandals and exhaustion?

Kemi Badenoch is not responsible for all this. But collectively the Tories are, and many MPs could have jumped ship at the time yet refused. Theirs is not a legacy to be proud of.

Reform may have less record in power but when your record is as woeful as the Tories, surely a clean slate is preferable.

No one should be willing to easily forgive and forget the lies and failures of the Tories, a party which broke Britain, and handed Number 10 to an equally awful continuity Labour government.
