Cringe Angela Rayner clip slamming Tory tax affairs resurfaces after stamp duty scandal | Politics | News

A video of Angela Rayner demanding for a former Conservative minister to be sacked over his tax affairs has resurfaced amid her own tax scandal. Angela Rayner has admitted she underpaid the stamp duty tax bill on her ยฃ800,000 Hove property and has referred herself the independent adviser on ministerial standards for investigation. In PMQ’s, Sir Keir Starmer stood by his deputy, despite calls from Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch for Ms Rayner to face the sack.
The Deputy Prime Minister posted a video on X on 21 January, 2023, alongside the caption: โNadhim Zahawiโs story about his tax affairs doesnโt add up. After months of denials, the truth emerges. His position is untenable. Rishi Sunak must dismiss him from his Cabinet.โ The video is now circulating on social media, with many demanding her resignation.
In the video, she said: โEvery pound of tax thatโs not delivered to the Chancellor and to the Exchequer means that it damages our public services, and we know the state theyโre in.
โSo the former Chancellor, when he was Chancellor last summer, made it clear at the time when he was questioned that he pays all his taxes, and that heโs done everything appropriately and was threatening legal letters to anyone that questioned him.
โNow itโs emerged, actually, thatโs not true and there was an HMRC investigation and that heโs had to pay penalties for that. I think that makes his position untenable.โ
X users have since responded to the resurfaced video, and said: โYour words have come back to haunt you. Time to do the decent thing and resign.โ
Another added: โAged like milk.โ
A third said: โI agree with it makes it untenable for someone to stay in their job. Resign.โ
The Deputy Prime Minister avoided paying the full ยฃ70,000 in stamp duty when buying her new seaside apartment, instead paying just ยฃ30,000. Documents lodged with the Land Registry show that Ms Rayner sold her 25% stake in the Greater Manchester house she shared with her ex-husband, for ยฃ162,500.
Speaking to Sky News, the Housing Minister said her living arrangement was โcomplexโ as her first home was sold to a trust following her divorce with Mark Rayner last year. She claims this was to provide stability for her son, who is disabled.
The Deputy Prime Minister now admits she received incorrect tax advice and has since considered โpacking it all inโ.
Ms Rayner said she was unable to speak on the matters before due to a court order which prevented her from publicising all of the details about her property ownership, yet she applied to the court for permission.
