David Lammy humiliated on GMB as Labour minister can’t defend him | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

David Lammy was skewered on Good Morning Britain by Kate Garraway as he faces increasing pressure following a huge prison row. It comes after the Deputy Prime Minister refused five times to say whether an asylum seeker had been mistakenly released from prison. Host Kate Garraway spoke to Justice minister Alex Davies-Jones over the latest blunder and did not hold back when it came to asking her where the Deputy Prime Minister was. A major manhunt was taking place on Wednesday night after it was revealed Brahim Kaddour-Cherif, a 24-year-old Algerian, was wrongly freed a week ago.

Kate Garraway said in a brutal takedown: “Why isn’t Justice Secretary David Lammy here? It’s his name that’s in the frame. It’s him who didn’t answer the question. Why has he put you up to take the flak?”

Alex explained that David will be speaking later to the media later today, but Ed Balls wasn’t having any of it. He continued to grill her: “He five times failed to answer that question in Parliament! To be quite honest, he could have explained what was on his mind. Very hard to ask you why he did that.”ย

One person reacted on X: “David Lammy is off digging himself an even bigger hole than heโ€™s in already instead of coming on TV and taking some responsibility for YET ANOTHER failure. [Alex] Davies Jones blaming everyone but Labour as per. Lammy needs to step up and then step down heโ€™s clearly not up to it.”

A second also said: “Labour proving how incompetent they are look at calamity lammys demeanour yesterday let alone him dodging the question 5 times to see what a clown show they are.”

It is understood that the Algerian was set free from HMP Wandsworth in London on October 29, but the mistake was only reported to the Metropolitan Police on Tuesday.

This comes just a few days after Hadush Kebatu was wrongly released from HMP Chelmsford on October 24.

A spokesperson for the Met said: โ€œShortly after 1pm on Tuesday, November 4, the Met was informed by the Prison Service that a prisoner had been released in error from HMP Wandsworth on Wednesday, October 29.

โ€œThe prisoner is a 24-year-old Algerian man.

โ€œOfficers are carrying out urgent inquiries in an effort to locate him and return him to custody.โ€
