Thank goodness. This might just have been the worst deal of all time. The British Government was set to pay Mauritius £35billion for the privilege of giving away our own territory. Utterly crackers.

The farce began under the Tories and continued under Labour.

Both decided to pay the Mauritians to take strategically significant islands off our hands.

Fortunately, Nigel Farage managed to persuade Trump that this was a terrible deal for both the UK and the US. But, honestly? Where have we got to if it requires a foreign leader to stand up for our own interests?

And what a difference a day makes. After years of wasted time on negotiations, Labour’s Defence Secretary now admits the deal is flawed. We could have told him that months ago.

If this government cared about our defence, they would urgently redirect the money earmarked for Mauritius to our depleted armed forces.

The weakness the Tories and Labour have shown over the Chagos Islands have empowered the Argentinians to start remaking nonsense claims over the Falklands.

It’s time we stood up for ourselves again. We’re a great country and should always be proud of ourselves.
