Emory University shooting: Suspected gunman Patrick Joseph White identified after cop killed

Witness describes hearing gunshots near Emory University active shooter scene

There were no warning signs before the fatal shooting near the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention campus in Atlanta on Friday, the suspected gunmanโ€™s neighbor says.

Police say Patrick Joseph White of Kennesaw, Georgia fatally shot DeKalb County Police Officer David Rose, a 33-year-old married father of two children with a third on the way. White, 30, opened fire from inside a CVS and fired several rounds at the nearby CDC campus, hitting at least four buildings and breaking windows, officials said.

The gunman was found dead in the CVS, but officials donโ€™t know โ€œwhether that was from officers or if it was self-inflicted,โ€ Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said Friday.

Whiteโ€™s neighbor, Joshua Shirah, told WSBTV the 30-year-old was โ€œan OK guyโ€ who lived with his parents and helped neighbors with yard work.

โ€œNot the kind of person I thought would do that, but stuff happens,โ€ Shirah said.

Police are reportedly working on the theory that the CDC was the shooterโ€™s target because he โ€œblamed his illness on the Covid-19 vaccine,โ€ a law enforcement official told CNN. No one inside the CDC building was harmed and no civilians were killed in the shooting, officials confirmed.

The shooting also sent the nearby Emory University campus into lockdown.

White lived with his parents and often did yard work for neighbors, Shirah said. Police arrived at Whiteโ€™s home around 11:30 p.m. on Friday night, he told WSBTV.

โ€œI communicated with him a few times,โ€ Shirah said. โ€œI know he did work for my grandfather around the house.โ€

โ€œNot the kind of person I thought would do that, but stuff happens,โ€ he added.
