Huge blow for โ€˜toxicโ€™ Keir Starmer as Labour faces election wipeout | Politics | News

Sir Keir Starmer has been kept away from Labour’s local election campaign trail because he is seen as being “toxic”, it has been reported. Brits are set to go to the polls on Thursday, May 7, to elect their representatives to local authorities. Labour is expected to lose more than 1,800 seats. It is also set to lose control of the Welsh Parliament – the Senedd – and trail behind the SNP in Scotland.

The Labour leader has reportedly been playing a small role in the party’s campaigning, attending fewer than 12 events around the country. It is thought that voters’ dislike of Sir Keir has meant he has not made many appearances. Labour is thought to be losing support to Zack Polanski’s Greens on the left, and Nigel Farage’s outfit, Reform UK, on the right.

The Prime Minister may face a leadership challenge after the results are in, with Andy Burnham, Angela Rayner and Wes Streeting mooted as potential successors.

“Thereโ€™s a visceral loathing of him and itโ€™s spread through all the vectors; itโ€™s not just one group.”

They added: โ€œHeโ€™s just seen as a completely insincere, two-faced person. Starmer has no followers, he only has enemies โ€“ itโ€™s incredible.โ€

Labour MPs are reportedly discussing plans to push for Sir Keir Starmer to resign in an open letter after a potential drubbing in the local elections.

Backbenchers from the 2024 intake are plotting to write a missive blaming the Prime Minister for expected losses at the polls and asking him to set a date for his departure, according to the Times.

Scottish Labour could drop to just 13 MSPs, with almost 20% of voters still undecided ahead of the Holyrood election on Thursday, a major new poll suggests.

A new multilevel regression with post-stratification (MRP) poll shared exclusively with the Press Association by More in Common spoke to more than 4,000 Scots between March 3 and April 26.

SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn, who is running for Holyrood, said: โ€œThere is going to be a constitutional shock on these isles next Thursday when the Scottish National Party hopefully win in Scotland, Plaid Cymru hopefully win in Wales as well.โ€
