I was in the room when Nigel Farage made biggest pitch yet for No 10 | Politics | News
Nigel Farage promised fireworks in Birmingham to match those in Westminster and boy did he deliver.
The Reform UK leader made his biggest pitch yet for No.10 while turmoil continued to engulf its current incumbent, Sir Keir Starmer.
Speaking in front of a 2500-strong crowd of fervent supporters Mr Farage used his latest rally to set out his vision of what a Reform government would do and how it would fix Britain.
Slashing welfare, cutting taxes, lopping off large chunks of the state, doing away with net zero, ending the small boat crisis, tackling crimeโฆthe list goes on.
Farage did this with his typical verve and swagger but there was even more urgency than usual. The reason? Sir Keir Starmerโs demise.
Branding him useless, the MP for Clacton said it is inevitable Starmer will be dumped in the dustbin of political history.
Whether thatโs this week, this month or this year, he warned Reform must be ready – placing his party on an immediate general election war footing.
Speaking to him shortly before his big speech at the cavernous National Exhibition Centre I got the distinct impression that a national vote this year would come sooner than he would prefer.
Words like โwe are getting thereโ suggest that, in an ideal world, he would like to wait another 12 months.
Farage has always insisted there is a strong chance of an election in 2027 and that clearly forms part of the Reform masterplan.
They still only have eight MPs and the process of vetting 600-odd election candidates is time consuming.
And it needs to be done ultra-thoroughly, especially in this post Mandelson era.
But politics is about seizing the moment and that may well come soon.
One thing is for sure, Reform is amassing a formidable team.
MPs like Richard Tice, Robert Jenrick, Suella Braverman, Sarah Pochin, Danny Kruger, Lee Anderson and Andrew Rosindell are Reformโs poster-politicians, very much in tune with the cause.
They could soon be joined by Matt Goodwin if he wins the upcoming Gorton and Denton by-election.
The sheer scale of their mega-rallies – similar to the Trumpian MAGA rallies – is impressive.
And judging by the passion of their supporters, borne out by sky-high poll ratings, Reform UK could well be bringing fireworks to Downing Street in the not too distant future.
