Why Barcelonaโ€™s kamikaze offside trap could change European football

Weird and wonderful things are happening at Barcelona this season. Their games have brought more goals than any other team in Europeโ€™s top five leagues. They have trapped more opponents offside than any club, too. Their kamikaze high line gives matches a bizarre look and similarly bizarre things seem to unfold: last week goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny impaled his own defender with his kneecap; in the same game, captain Raphinha scored from outside the box with his face.

More from Lawrence Ostlere on what we could be seeing tonight:

‘Lamine’s a genius’ – Hansi Flick

Barcelona boss Hansi Flick has been another to sing the praises of the sideโ€™s starboy. โ€œLamineโ€™s a genius,โ€ he said.

โ€œWhat he’s doing with the ball, it’s unbelievable. Every pass is normally… with the right pressure, with the right length. It’s really unbelievable [at 17 years old].

โ€œAnd for me it was the match on Wednesday, when he brought us back with his actions and with his goal, It was very good to see. But he always has to show that.

โ€œIt’s now the second leg and a very important leg, because we want to reach the final. This is our goal and we need everyone on the highest level against this fantastic team of Inter.โ€

Inter need to be at their best – Inzaghi

More from Simone Inzaghi. He says his side are determined to make a second final in three years: โ€œThe group has belief, desire. They are looking forward to this match. There is the right tension, and we have been training well.

โ€œWe know that [Barcelona] take some risks in defence, but it is a risk that is put into a general plan by a very good coach like (Hansi) Flick, whom I esteem a lot.

โ€œThey are the team that scores more goals in the world, they have already claimed two trophies and are in contention for two more, therefore we know that Inter will need to be at its best.โ€

Inter to target Lamine Yamal – Simone Inzaghi

โ€œFor sure, he will double-marked,โ€ Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi said about super-talent Lamine Yamal ahead of tonightโ€™s encounter.

โ€œWe will try to keep him in check but, as I said in the first leg after seeing him live, he is an incredible talent.

โ€œHe is only 17 but he is very dangerous when he has the ball. All his team-mates in the difficult moments give him the ball.

โ€œWhat impressed me the most about him is how quick-witted he is – as soon as he gets the ball, he already knows what his following move will be. Therefore, he will be under special surveillance.”

Inter ‘really tough to defend’ – Hansi Flick

Letโ€™s hear from the managers.

Barca boss Hansi Flick says: โ€œThey’re a strong team, very experienced team. But also they love to play football, and the automatism they have, it’s really tough to defend.

โ€œAnd for us tomorrow will be… everyone has to be included in the defence, and this is the most important thing that we have to do.โ€

He also noted yesterday that Lewandowski was doing โ€œmuch better than expectedโ€ and ready for the bench. โ€œSo itโ€™s when we need him, maybe he can come in.โ€

Team news – Barcelona

Hansi Flick makes one change to last weekโ€™s squad, with the injured Jules Kounde replaced by Eric Garcia in defence.

As the German suggested earlier in the week, Robert Lewandowski is on the bench after missing their last four games with a hamstring injury.
