JK Rowling blasts Labour MP over Muslim event that separated women | Politics | News
JK Rowling has blasted a Labour MP who celebrated a Muslim event that segregated women. Stella Creasy shared a social media video of the event in her North London seat which only showed men. The MP for Walthamstow described the Milad Al Nabi march as a โnoisy annual celebration for our local Muslim community of the prophet mohammed’s [sic] birthdayโ.
The Harry Potter author, whose real name is Joanne Rowling, said: โYou could swap her for that parakeet she thought was lost and the only noticeable difference would be the sudden absence of hypocrisy and a huge surge in likeability.โ This is a reference to an incident earlier this year when Ms Creasy bemused locals by thinking one of the capital’s 30,000 ring-necked parakeets was an escaped pet parrot.
In a later post on social media site X, Ms Rowling defended her comment by saying: โEveryoneโs allowed to disagree with me, just as Iโm allowed to disagree with Stella when she says some women are born with penises.โ
In May 2022, Ms Creasy said JK Rowling was โwrongโ and a woman can have a penis.
Ms Creasy, who has described herself as a โproud feministโ, did eventually share a post showing a group of women who marked the Milad Al Nabi event.
In response to Ms Rowling, the MP said: โ[For what itโs worth] I am a riot on a night out and have plenty of friends across the political spectrum, but sure donโt put me on your Christmas card list (I will live).
โBut give it a rest on the pitchfork mob.
โToday a man who harassed me is being sentenced in court. He treated me like a human punch bag because he disagreed with my views. That culture doesnโt come from nowhere and it damages everyoneโs capacity to speak and live freely.โ
It came after the Conservatives accused Ms Creasy of engaging in โexclusionary nonsenseโ.
Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities Joy Morrissey said: โThis is the same Labour MP who thinks it is perfectly acceptable for men to use women’s toilets, yet apparently not acceptable for them to attend the same event.
โStella Creasy should know better than to engage in this divisive and exclusionary nonsense.โ
