5 things you need to know as PM in crisis
- Sir Keir Starmer is battling to stay in 10 Downing Street amid growing demands from within Labour to resign over the Lord Mandelson scandal. The Prime Minister is facing intense pressure following the resignation of his top aide yesterday, before his communications chief quit this morning.
- Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar urged Sir Keir to stand down at a hastily arranged press conference this afternoon in what the Tories branded “one of the final nails in Starmer’s political coffin”. Mr Sarwar declared that the “distraction needs to end and the leadership in Downing Street has to change” as he raised fears over the upcoming Scottish Parliament elections in May.
- But the Prime Minister’s entire Cabinet came out in a show of support for him following Mr Sarwar’s call for him to step down. Ministers shared a series of coordinated posts on social media as Sir Keir clings on to his job.
- While the PM was holed up in No 10, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage was addressing 2,000 Reform supporters at a rally in Birmingham. The Clacton MP declared that his insurgent party was now on a “general election war footing”. And in a brutal attack, he said the “political life of the most unpopular and most useless prime minister in living memory is drawing to a close”.
- The Prime Minister emerged from 10 Downing Street just before 6pm to address a crunch meeting of Labour MPs in Parliament, which lasted for over an hour. He told them he has “won every fight I’ve ever been in” and is “not prepared to walk away” and urged his party to unite in the fight against Reform.
