Keir Starmer reveals what he really thinks about Donald Trump | Politics | News
Keir Starmer has insisted he and Donald Trump โget on really wellโ despite constant attacks by the US President.
The Prime Minister denied he was snubbed when it emerged the pair were not scheduled to hold one-on-one talks while at the G7 summit in Evian, in France.
Sir Keir insisted Mr Trump did not take aim at him over his social media ban for under 16s or defence spending failures when they sat beside each other at events on Tuesday and on Monday.
Speaking to journalists at the summit on Tuesday, Sir Keir said: โI sat next to Donald Trump for two hours last night at dinner, which was just the G7 leaders. There were no listening rooms, there were no staff, no advisers. It was literally an opportunity for all of us to have a very honest and frank conversation.โ
He added: โI actually spoke to Donald on Saturday before we came. We get on really well and Iโve been with him now, Saturday on the phone and last night and this morning. Weโre sitting next to each other so thereโs lots of room for side conversations in the margins.โ
Mr Trump is set to hold bilateral talks with leaders from other countries, such as the UAE, Qatar and India.
Sir Keir previously insisted he is “not going to yield”, following repeated criticism of his position on the Iran war from Mr Trump.
The president also launched attacks on the UK government’s deal to hand over sovereignty of the Chagos archipelago to Mauritius, because he wanted to use the joint UK-US base on the island of Diego Garcia, to launch attacks on Iran.
Mr Trump took aim at Sir Keir earlier this year by suggesting he was not dealing with Winston Churchill.
Sir Keir said the US President did not raise the sudden departure of Defence Secretary John Healey last week following a lack of adequate spending in Britainโs delayed Defence Investment Plan.
The PM hinted there was no new money to fund the plan which has yet to be released.
Sir Keir told reporters he had also congratulated Mr Trumpโs peace deal with Iran.
He said: โI’ve had the opportunity to congratulate him, as have all the other G7 leaders and leaders around the world. That is really significant, because this is a big breakthrough it’s an important moment we’ve all seen the impact this conflict has had on the UK.
He added: โWhat we’ve discussed here is how we now work together to make sure that it sticks and becomes that final deal.โ
