Kemi Badenoch to make major announcement on boosting defence budget | Politics | News
The first job of any government is keeping its people safe. The Labour government is failing in that duty. Today I am announcing that a future Conservative government will bring back the two-child benefit cap that Keir Starmer has scrapped, and we will use the money we save to invest in our armed forces.
There are two points of principle here. First, I think it is only fair that those on benefits should have to make the same choices about having children as those who arenโt. Secondly, the world is getting more and more dangerous โ war in Europe, war in the Middle East, constant threats towards our country. The government needs to rise to the challenge of a more unstable global environment by giving our military the full backing it requires.
Time and again weโve seen that Keir Starmer has the wrong principles and the wrong priorities.
When our allies in the US asked for the use of our bases to help end the regime in Iran โ a regime that has funded international terrorism, brutally murdered thousands of its people marching for freedom, conducted multiple attacks here in the UK, and attempted to develop a nuclear bomb โ Keir Starmer said no.
It wasnโt until Iran and its terrorist proxies in Hezbollah started targeting UK military bases and our allies in the Middle East that Starmer authorised the use of our bases.
But even now he wonโt let our military take out the missile sites trying to kill British service personnel. Weak.
In an increasingly dangerous world we cannot stand by and expect others to defend British troops and British assets.
This week, Rachel Reeves had a chance to tell us how she will properly fund our armed forces.
But we can see from independent analysis of the governmentโs spending plans: there is plenty of taxpayersโ money going into record benefits, but too little going towards our armed forces.
Today I am showing how the Conservative Party will ensure that we start properly funding our military, prioritising defence over an ever-increasing welfare bill.
These are tough but necessary choices. But only the Conservatives will do whatโs necessary to ensure a stronger economy and a stronger country.
