Sir Keir Starmer has been accused of sabotaging Brexit alongside his deputy in a blistering attack by one of his own MPs. Branding the Prime Minister and David Lammy “uber remainers”, Labour MP Graham Stringer tore into the pair and claims they had been “sabotaging Brexit by stealth from the day after the referendum”.

In a devastating intervention, Mr Stringer told the Daily Express that the “only politically honest way to do what they want is to have another referendum”, saying it would “test their biased views”. The MP for Blackley and Middleton South warned Sir Keir – who campaigned for and voted for Remain – that “if people knew what a reversal would mean there would be a bigger majority to stay out”.

Britain overwhelmingly voted to leave the European Union ten years ago, and the Daily Express has been campaigning to Give Us A Proper Brexit, which demands the country leave the ECHR to take back control of the border. The crusade also calls for a 12-mile fishing zone around the country to keep our fisheries only usable by British fishermen, as well as demanding Whitehall take an axe to EU red tape instead of adopting more of Brussels’ laws

Mr Stringer, 76, is a prominent Eurosceptic within the Labour movement and called for the country to unshackle itself from the bloc in the 2016 referendum. He has consistently opposed attempts to rejoin, and voted against plans which would have seen the UK stay in the customs union in the event of a no deal Brexit in 2018.

Shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster Alex Burghart MP said the Government was “trying to reopen historic debates to distract from their continual scandals”. He added: “Labour should be focused on the issues that matter to the public today, not attempting to hash out arguments of the past. It is clear that Labour wants Britain to take Europeโ€™s rules – this is yet more terrible negotiating by Keir Starmer.”

Reform UK’s deputy leader Richard Tice piled on the pressure and accused Labour of being “hell-bent on outsourcing British sovereignty to Brussels at every turn”. He said: “From pushing to rejoin the Single Market, to defending every scrap of EU red tape, and trying to sneak freedom of movement through the back door, Labour are hell-bent on outsourcing British sovereignty to Brussels at every turn.”

Mr Tice added: “They stood on a manifesto promising their constituents less Europe – not more. No wonder even their own MPs are getting twitchy about this blatant betrayal of Brexit happening in plain sight.”

Another Brexiteer MP, Reform UK’s Lee Anderson said that Mr Stringer was “correct” adding: “In my opinion both Lammy and Starmer are traitors to the British people. They do not care about democracy, they care about their own political ideology and their champagne socialist friends.”

David Campbell Bannerman, a former MEP and renowned Brexiteer, added that Mr Stringer was “absolutely right” as he accused the Government of playing “a game of Grandma’s footsteps”. He said: “The Reset is designed to undermine Brexit bit by bit like a game of ‘Grandma’s footsteps’ – every time you turn round they have crept us closer to rejoining the EU. This disrespects the largest ever democratic vote in British history and is treasonous.”

The row erupted as the Government pushes ahead with its EU reset, which critics say amounts to rejoining the bloc by stealth through dynamic alignment with Brussels rules. Labour insiders have defended the approach as pragmatic and in Britain’s economic interests, arguing closer ties with the EU will boost trade and growth.

But Brexiteers warn the Government is betraying the 2016 referendum result and surrendering British sovereignty to unelected Eurocrats on the continent. A Labour source said: “In an increasingly volatile world, this Labour Government will always put Britainโ€™s national interests first, which requires a closer partnership with our allies in Europe to strengthen our economy and security. Thatโ€™s how we increase long-term growth and help ease the cost of living for working people.”
