Lammy praises ‘generous’ Donald Trump in major U-turn | Politics | News

David Lammy has praised Donald Trump despite previous comments branding the incoming US President as a “neo-Nazi-sympathising sociopath”.

The Foreign Secretary also referred to Mr Trump as a โ€œrevisionist actorโ€ and said he is not a โ€œwarmongerโ€.

Mr Lammy and Mr Trump met for an “extended dinner” last year alongside Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

Speaking to BBCR4 this morning, Mr Lammy said: “The Donald Trump I met was a man who had incredible grace, generosity, very keen to be a good host, very funny, very friendly, very warm about the UK, our Royal Family, Scotland.”

While in opposition, Mr Lammy referred to the Republican as a “tyrant in a toupee”.

Speaking in July after the UK general election, Mr Lammy defended himself by saying, “You are going to struggle to find any politician who didn’t have things to say about Donald Trump back in the day.”

It comes as Sir Keir congratulated Mr Trump ahead of his inauguration and said that the special relationship between the United States and UK โ€œwill continue to flourish for years to comeโ€.

The US president-elect will be sworn in to his second term in the White House later on Monday, eight years after he first took the oath of office.

In a statement released overnight, the Prime Minister paid tribute to the โ€œdepth of friendshipโ€ between the 47th president and the UK, and pledged to continue to โ€œwork together to ensure the success of both our countries and deliver for people on both sides of the Atlantic.โ€
